The Process / ¿Cómo se hacen?
These images are all based on photos from my archive. Most of the useful ones don't actually have a subject; often I am just looking for patterns of light.
Cell phone pictures will do, but I prefer "real" cameras. If I do film photography, I develop the film myself using a dark-bag and rotation cylinder. By now, I taught myself 35mm and medium format B/W, C41 and slides. Doing them yourself is nice because you have control over the chemistry and processing.
Then I choose one or two main images, the foundation of the composition. These become layers in my editing program. I keep adding images above or below them and blend them together.
As the "stack" of layers grows, I experiment with different ways of making the images merge and interact with each other. I dial in more or less of each layer, or let through only certain parts, so that the textures, shapes, and details appear only where and how I prefer to see them in the final image.
Estos imágenes son hechas a base de fótos. A veces mi celular ya está suficiente, otras veces tomo una cámara moderna o de película. Si son rollos de película los revelo yo mismo. El tipo de película y los químicos del revelado pueden darle un toque interesante a la imagen.
Después elijo una foto principal, que es la base de la composición. A partir de ahí voy agregando otras fotografías, una encima o debajo de la imagen principal, como si fueran capas. Cuando ya tengo todas las capas en su lugar, experimento con distintas formas de hacer que se mezclen entre sí.
Poco a poco voy mostrando u ocultando partes de cada imagen para que las texturas, las formas y los detalles aparezcan solo donde quiero. Así, las imágenes empiezan a dialogar entre sí y terminan formando la imagen final.
